Tradewinds Travel Club Reviews The Florida Keys

About The Florida Keys

A coral archipelago located at the tip of the Florida peninsula, the Florida Keys encompass a total land area of around 130 square miles and include about 1700 islands, though not all inhabited. Only a little of 40 of the islands which make up the Keys are connected by bridges making it necessary to get to them by sea or air.

Originally inhabited by local Native Americans, it was not until the 1500′s that the area was even charted. Once the area was established it began to thrive. The location of the Keys made it an important outpost for trade with Cuba as well as the Bahamas and was also on the main trade route to New Orleans. Once a major area for shipwrecks, improved navigation later led to a decrease in the population of the area at least until the bridges began to be built and tourism began to climb.

Today, Key West is visited by millions of tourists from around the world. Tourism and fishing make up the two most important industries in the Keys and ferry’s now offer an easy way for travelers to get from the mainland of Florida.

    Nice article

I love the Florida Keys and wish that I could live there full time. Sometimes it gets a bad wrap because of Key West, but there is so much more to do than just visiting the Southernmost Point Marker.

Check out the Blue Hole, or Perkys Bat Tower for example. Wont cost you a penny and you will start to see the real hidden beauty of the Keys.

    Oh, another thing.

Try to take your time and see a bit of each of the islands as so many people whizz down and skip Key Largo for example which has a charm that is true keys.

The motto is the Florida Keys is more than just Key West and the tourist madhouse.
